9th Grade
- Service: Get involved in community service and join MC Project iServe
- How to Join:
- Complete 300 hours of volunteer/community service. Hours can be accumulated from 7th through 12th grade.
- Pick up the required form from your school counselor or check the Service Board in the hall.
- Recognition you can receive:
- 75, 150, and 225 Hours: Certificate and a treat.
- 300 Hours: Certificate, an exclusive MC Project iServe Pin, eligibility to become a member of MC Project iServe, the option to purchase a letterman's patch, and special cords to wear at graduation!

JUNIOR YEAR TIMELINE: COLLEGE & CAREER PLANNING
August - December
- College & Financial Planning: Discuss future college plans and financial considerations with parents/guardians.
- PSAT: Take the PSAT in the fall to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Competition

January - June
- Financial Aid Estimate: Complete the FAFSA4Caster
- College Tour: Participate in the Junior Higher Education College Tour during the spring
- Campus Tours: When you have time go around and visit college campuses. This will help you get a feel for what college is like and what is the best fit for you.
- Scholarship Inquiry: Engage with college admissions representatives to inquire about scholarship programs.
- ACT Testing:
- Take the ACT at least once
- A free state ACT is generally available in late February/early March.
- Consider taking additional ACT tests in the summer or early fall.

September: Get Started Strong!
- ACT Prep & Test: Plan for additional ACT tests in early fall. Register at www.act.org.
- Your College Compass: Dive into our College Guide (English / Spanish) – your go-to resource for applications, FAFSA, scholarships, and key timelines.
- Campus Tours: When you have time go around and visit college campuses. This will help you get a feel for what college is like and what is the best fit for you.
- Build Your Brag File: Start gathering powerful letters of recommendation from teachers, advisors, co-workers, and leaders. You'll need these for scholarships, resumes, and college applications!
- Craft Your Story: Begin brainstorming ideas for those crucial college application essays. Think about:
- What drives your career ambitions?
- How do your core values shape you?
- A challenge you conquered and what you learned.
- Your personal motto or guiding theme.
- Someone who inspires you and why.
- Secure Your FSA ID: You and your parents will need FSA IDs to complete the FAFSA. Apply now!
- Scholarship Hunt: Our District Scholarship Page is updated regularly – make it a frequent stop!
October - December: The Heart of Application Season
- Utah College Application Week (UCAW): Don't miss this! October is ideal for applying to colleges. Deadlines vary, so jump on UCAW. We'll have college representatives in the counseling office to help you apply. Listen for school announcements!
- FAFSA Opens! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid typically launches between October and December.Get ready to apply for financial aid.
- MC FAFSA Night: Watch your mail and announcements for details about our FAFSA Night. Get personalized help with your application and even a chance to apply for a scholarship just for attending!
- Opportunity & PRIME Scholarships: Priority Deadlines! These applications usually open in December. Submit early to hit the priority deadline.
- Pro Tip: Double-check everything and call the scholarship offices (Opportunity/PRIME) if you have questions.
- Keep Hunting: The District Scholarship Page continues to be a goldmine for new scholarship opportunities.
January: College-Specific Funding
- Admitted? Now for College Scholarships! Once you're accepted, explore scholarships offered directly by the university (alumni, diversity, needs-based, involvement, ambassador, etc.). Contact their financial aid office.
- Major-Specific Money: If you know your major, check university/college websites for departmental scholarships.
- Don't Stop! New scholarships are always popping up on the District Scholarship Page.
February - Summer: Celebrate & Confirm!
- Scholarship Surge! March and April are prime scholarship months. Keep checking the District Scholarship Page consistently!
- Opportunity & PRIME Scholarships: FINAL Deadlines! These applications usually close around February. Do not miss the deadlines or you will not be able to receive anything.
- Pro Tip: Double-check everything and call the scholarship offices (Opportunity/PRIME) if you have questions.
- Lock It In: Once you've chosen your college, accept all scholarship and admissions offers by their deadlines to ensure you don't lose them!
- Confirm Everything: Follow up with each college/university to ensure they've received your FAFSA and admissions application (if you haven't heard back).
- May 1st is National College Decision Day!
- Considering a Deferring? If you plan to defer admission, contact the colleges you applied to and complete their deferment process.
- CELEBRATE! You have worked hard in all your classes and are making it to graduation. Take time to enjoy and celebrate your senior year!
NCAA
If you plan on competing in any college sport you must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
You must take certain core academic classes each year of high school. If you do not meet these strict NCAA requirements you may lose eligibility and not be allowed to compete in college athletics.
Talk to your school counselor immediately and visit NCAA Eligibility Center for more information.
